How did everything begin?

A beginning beyond imagining
Ada and Tunde look up at the night sky over Lagos. Every star seems like a tiny light, yet many are enormous suns far away. Scientists have found evidence that our universe began expanding about 13.8 billion years ago from an extremely hot, dense state. Space itself expanded; this was not an explosion into an empty room. As the universe expanded, it cooled. Matter could begin to come together.
Explore
Compare how stones, water and air behave. What keeps its shape? What flows? Record your observations with an adult.
Reflect
What evidence might help us learn about something that happened before anyone was alive?
Original, shortened Montessori-inspired retellings, not official AMI lesson scripts. Dates are approximate; scientific understanding evolves. The panorama is an imaginative illustration, not a to-scale timeline.
