Follow the Child: Observing Before You Act
The heart of Montessori at home is quiet observation. Here's how to watch, notice and respond to what your child truly needs.

Why observation comes first
Children show us what they are ready to learn through what they repeat, what they reach for and what frustrates them. Watching for a few minutes before stepping in helps you offer the right activity at the right time.
How to observe
Sit nearby with a notebook. Write what you see, not what you think it means: 'stacked three cups, then knocked them down and laughed' rather than 'is bored'. Do this for ten minutes, a few times a week.
Turning notes into action
Look for patterns. Repeated pouring may mean your child is ready for a simple pouring tray. Repeated throwing may mean they need a safe place to throw soft balls. Respond to the need behind the behaviour.
