Big Questions: Exploring Our Connected World

Use a child's curiosity about nature, people and the universe as the starting point for Montessori-inspired investigations.

Big Questions: Exploring Our Connected World

Begin with wonder

Elementary Montessori education connects sciences, geography, history and human life through a broad view of the world, often called cosmic education. At home, begin with a genuine question: 'Why do we have a rainy season?' or 'How does a seed become a tree?' You do not need to know every answer.

Make a small investigation

Help your child choose one question to explore. Gather a library book, a map or safe objects to observe. For a plant investigation, record changes in a seedling with drawings and dates. Distinguish what you observed from what you think might explain it.

Follow the connections

A question about a mango can lead to botany, local farming, climate, trade and food traditions. Younger elementary children may enjoy models and illustrated stories; older children may want to compare sources or make a timeline. Follow interest instead of requiring every possible connection.

Share discoveries and care for the world

Invite your child to share a poster, a short story or a model with someone who is interested. Ask which questions remain unanswered. Connect learning to a practical act of care, such as tending a plant or reducing waste, without making your child responsible for solving large world problems.
