Big Emotions: Connection Before Correction
Trauma-informed, positive discipline ideas for meltdowns — especially helpful for foster and adoptive families.

Behaviour is communication
A meltdown often means a child's nervous system is overwhelmed. Children who have experienced loss or change may need extra help feeling safe before they can calm down.
Stay close and calm
Lower your voice, get down to their level and name the feeling: 'You are really upset that we had to leave.' Your calm presence helps their body settle.
Teach after the storm
Once calm returns, reconnect with a hug or quiet time together, then talk briefly about what to try next time. Predictable routines also reduce stress for every child.
When to seek support
If big emotions feel constant or hard to manage, an E.C.S. consultation can help you build a plan tailored to your child and family.
